Survival of the Paranoid: Be Afraid! Be very afraid… (vol. 1)

So you’ve probably read some of our (my) survivalist posts… or not, if you think we’re (I’m) just raving lunatics. Which is fair enough, so that got me thinking of all the different rational/irrational fears out there. At some point, a rational caution around, say, the edge of a cliff crosses that fine line into a true “fear of heights;” a phobia. So here’s part one of our favorite (ir)rational fears!

Ablutophobia – fear of bathing, washing, or cleaning.
If you suffer from this, please, we beg you, get to the nearest psychiatrist, for the sake of society.

Ichthyophobia – fear/dislike of fish.
This is not funny! Fish are terrifying! Not at the aquarium, not on my plate, but in the ocean. Especially the warm ocean. Where there are poisonous fish. Like if they touch you, you could die. Think about it.

Nomophobia – fear of being out of mobile phone contact.
I also heard that a recent study (google it if you’re interested, I’m just lazy so I’m going to rely on my spotty memory… hey at least I’m honest) that says Americans rely more on their computers than their dogs. You people are never surviving the apocalypse.

Carnophobia – Fear of meat.
You’re missing out.

Barophobia – fear of gravity.
Wait, really? This was so out there I had to do some (extremely casual) research… apparently it’s usually because people don’t understand how gravity works* and worry that it could suddenly change and crush them, make them fall over, or float away.

Anthophobia – fear of flowers.
Careful of that daisy, it bites!

*Trust me, I can relate. I spent a year of my life studying it because it confused me to think about so much. Not kidding.
