Okay, east coast readers, you’re probably not going to find this in your local farmers’ market. But on the west coast, citrus season is going to be here before you know it and you’d best be ready.*

On both coasts, Hangar One vodka (St. George Spirits, Alameda, CA), has been enjoying a bit of a vogue with the vodka-soda crowd. Know Your Produce: Tomatillos

We here at Edukatorz are introducing a new feature – Know Your Produce. Since Edukatorz readers are awesome, we figure you’re not a bunch of Charlies and you’ve had common produce like pears and blueberries. At least we figure you’re eating some sort of produce every day since you’re supposed to eat five-eight fruits and/or vegetables a day. If you’re eating fries and drinking milkshakes* all day instead, might we suggest you study this series closely and reevaluate your life choices. Anyway, we’re going to add some spice into your produce shopping by edukating you about produce you may not be familiar with.

Today’s produce item is a vegetable – Tomatillos.**Do you enjoy salsa verde, the delicious green salsa we put on everything? It is made with tomatillos. Tomatillos look like green tomatoes with paper husks on the outside. This makes sense as they are also members of the nightshade family. Tomatillo season roughly follows tomato season so if you’re eating seasonally (you should be!) you can get them at the same time.

Tomatillos are tart and not as sweet as tomatoes. You can eat tomatillos raw (with the husks removed) or you can cook them. They store well in the refrigerator for about a week, but will keep for longer if you remove the husks and put them into a sealed container. There are a ton of cool things you can do with tomatillos.
